It had a lot of steps and might have been a little daunting for the novice Elements user. So I think you&#8217;re going to love this one for its total simplicity. It&#8217;s one of the black-and-white <strong>Guided Edits<\/strong> in PSE 15 called <strong>Line Drawing<\/strong>. (It might also be there in 14, but when I tried to find out which version it debuted in, I wasn&#8217;t successful.) I played with it using a close-up photo of my dog and loved it. For this example though, I used a stock photo from Pixabay. Your choices are <strong>After Only<\/strong>, <strong>Before Only<\/strong>, <strong>Before &amp; After &#8211; Horizontal<\/strong> and <strong>Before &amp; After Vertical<\/strong>. Below I&#8217;m showing you <strong>Before &amp; After Horizontal<\/strong>, where you can watch the transformation as it happens. One click is all it takes. If you click more than once, the sketch effect becomes more minimalist; give it a try and see if you like it. Clicking on the <strong>Adjust Layer Opacity<\/strong> button adds back a hint of colour without losing the sketchy effect. Multiple clicks on this button however don&#8217;t produce additional effects. My copy of Elements has a glitch in it such that the <strong>Levels<\/strong> button in this <strong>Edit<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t work. But I know that <strong>CTRL\/CMD&gt;L<\/strong> will bring up the <strong>Levels<\/strong> interface. If you&#8217;ve never used the <strong>Levels<\/strong> adjustment menu you&#8217;re in for a treat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23597\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/8-1-500x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/8-1-500x430.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/8-1-768x660.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/8-1-675x580.jpg 675w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/8-1.jpg 984w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Levels<\/strong> adjustments can be made on all the different channels (<strong>RGB, Red Green<\/strong> and <strong>Blue<\/strong>) but for this purpose <strong>RGB<\/strong> &#8211; the default &#8211;\u00a0is the only one we need worry about. I played with the sliders so you could see the way each adjustment changes the image. Looking at the histogram &#8211; that black bit in the <strong>Input Levels<\/strong> box &#8211; you can see the way the curve bends as you move the sliders. For this adjustment, moving the right little wedge to the left lightens the image.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23598\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/9-1-500x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/9-1-500x430.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/9-1-768x661.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/9-1-674x580.jpg 674w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/9-1.jpg 984w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, moving the left wedge to the right darkens the lines on the image and seems to sharpen it too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23599\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/10-1-500x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/10-1-500x430.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/10-1-768x660.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/10-1-675x580.jpg 675w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/10-1.jpg 983w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trick is to adjust them so that the image pleases you. Remember from our other <strong>Guided Edits<\/strong>? You can save it or you can work on it some more. I picked <strong>In Expert<\/strong> so I could play with it just a bit more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23603\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/14-1-146x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/14-1-146x500.jpg 146w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/14-1-169x580.jpg 169w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/14-1.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, there are two layers there when you move to <strong>Expert<\/strong>. There&#8217;s no limit to the things you can do once you get to this point. The <strong>Opacity<\/strong> of the sketch layer is <strong>82%<\/strong> when you first open up your project in <strong>Expert<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23604\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/15-1-500x291.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/15-1-500x291.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/15-1-768x447.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/15-1-875x509.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/15-1.jpg 1359w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just as an example, I put the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> of the sketch layer to 100% and that hint of colour (really obvious when you look at the sky) is GONE. I don&#8217;t think it looks as interesting, do you? But you could use this to make personalized colouring books&#8230; think of the options1<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23605\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/16-1-500x278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/16-1-500x278.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/16-1-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/16-1-875x486.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/16-1.jpg 1357w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So then I lowered the Opacity to 60%, which keeps the sketchy detail but lets more of the colour come through. You could also lighten up the coloured layer underneath in spots so only the sketchy bits are visible in that area. If you plan to do that, <strong>right-click<\/strong> on the photo layer and select <strong>Layer from Background<\/strong>, so you can add a transparent layer underneath it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23606\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/17-1-500x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/17-1-500x279.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/17-1-768x428.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/17-1-875x488.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/17-1.jpg 1354w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re totally happy with how it looks, you can merge the layers together and save it with a funky name.
