Sketchy Simplified<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today’s tutorial doesn’t need a lot of explantation. It’s a little goodie I stumbled on when I was playing with this photo. I took it with my cell phone camera and was pleasantly shocked at how it came out, even when blown up in PSE<\/strong>. The sky is very flat, but that’s how the sky looked for much of my time in Ireland, so I’m not obsessing over it.<\/p>\n

I’ve been playing with these Guided Edits<\/strong> just to see what they do, and the Orton Effect<\/strong> is amazing!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With this one, you can click the Edit button several times to create an additive change to your photo. But I only clicked it once.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The difference isn’t obvious, but it’ll be quite apparent once I change the settings.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

See the change now? I barely moved the Blur slider<\/strong> to the right, I think the numeric amount was 4. But the whole image is softer and dreamier.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I played with all the sliders; the Noise<\/strong> one was the one I really wasn’t sure of. But in the end, I moved it to the right about 12 and the stone is starting to look sketchier.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

By pushing the Brightness slider<\/strong> over about 1\/3 of the way between the default and the max, I got this nice look.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As you can see, there are now 3 layers there when I clicked through to the Expert editor<\/strong>. Each layer can be further adjusted, Blend Modes<\/strong> changed to suit your mood and Opacity<\/strong>\u00a0lowered. But I was happy with it so I just Merged<\/strong> them all.<\/p>\n

But I tried a few more things on this image. I Duplicated<\/strong> the image layer so it would remain unchanged before I went on the add a Filter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Filter>Stylize>Find Edges<\/strong> is the filter I used.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Don’t be alarmed! A simple tweak will make this work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

All I did was pull the Opacity<\/strong> of the top layer down to 32%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And all that was left was to Merge the layers again. Then I saved the resulting image for use in a layout later. I plan to use it with a mask (or two) to blend it into the background a bit and that’ll add some life to the sky.<\/p>\n

This should work with just about any photo with strong detail. Give it a whirl!<\/p>\n
