(She calls me Queen of the Hoarders, which may be a slight exaggeration. Slight&#8230;) I&#8217;ll never be a minimalist, but a girl&#8217;s gotta start somewhere right? So as I was flipping through some back issues of <strong>Canadian Scrapbooker<\/strong> (to see why they hadn&#8217;t already been recycled), I found some paper layouts that I thought could make interesting digital techniques. The paper scrapper (<strong>Erin Morehouse<\/strong> of Beaconsfield, Qu\u00e9bec) who created the layout shown below used a Silhouette Cameo to die-cut the letters from her background paper. Before I went on to the next step, I <strong>Simplified<\/strong> the text. Otherwise I ran the risk of messing it up when I used the <strong>Type tool<\/strong> again. So use whatever colour you want. The stroke needed to be big enough to give me the effect I was looking for, but not so big it blunted the text. I used the same tweaks on these text layers for conformity. See the difference between the free-standing letter &#8216;a&#8217; and the &#8216;a&#8217;s in &#8220;balancing&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27365\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/10-2-500x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/10-2-500x225.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/10-2-768x346.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/10-2-875x394.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/10-2.jpg 1516w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After I had my text positioned where I wanted it, I <strong>Merged<\/strong> the\u00a0 text layers so I could continue to play with the text as a single object.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27366\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/11-1-500x229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/11-1-500x229.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/11-1-768x352.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/11-1-875x401.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/11-1.jpg 1514w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next I moved the text layer underneath the background paper layer. (<em>This step isn&#8217;t necessary, I did it to show you how the process will work from this point.<\/em>) I <strong>Selected<\/strong> the text by <strong>CTRL\/CMD&gt;clicking<\/strong> on the <strong>layer thumbnail<\/strong> in the <strong>Layers panel<\/strong>. See the marching ants? Some needed to be resized to work correctly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27372\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/17-1-500x344.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/17-1-500x344.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/17-1-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/17-1-843x580.jpg 843w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/17-1.jpg 1233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But to see the full effect, I opted to add a <strong>D<\/strong><strong>rop Shadow<\/strong> to the woodgrain paper layer. No fancy footwork here, just a simple, <strong>Hard<\/strong> default shadow. (There seems to be some sort of instability with PSE 15 and Windows 10 because this freeze happens\u00a0unpredictably, but frequently, when I have PSE open.) I have to start my layout over from scratch, but I have these screenshots to help me out.
