Thanks for the grace you all provide me, it&#8217;s deeply appreciated!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m finally wrapping up that Zen doodle project. Have you guessed what I put in the centre? Let&#8217;s see! This is where we ended last time. I acted on a hunch and took a look at the <strong>Custom Shape<\/strong> (aka <strong>Cookie Cutter<\/strong>) library. Whoa!! There&#8217;s a Yin-Yang symbol in there! To ensure it&#8217;s an actual circle, I selected <strong>Defined Proportions<\/strong>, which defaults to <strong>1:1<\/strong> and dragged out a symbol. <strong>Elements<\/strong> puts these shapes on their own layer, so once it&#8217;s been <strong>Simplified<\/strong>, it&#8217;s easy enough to resize and reposition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-60912\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-1-500x273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-1-500x273.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-1-768x420.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-1-1536x840.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-1-875x479.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see here, I have a doodle layer, a yin-yang layer and a black outline layer that has a Cloak of Invisibility on it at the moment. So when I <strong>Duplicated<\/strong> finished segments and moved them into place, they didn&#8217;t fit precisely over their spots. That means I have some&#8230; gaps. But&#8230; moving the black outline layer down to the bottom of the stack and <strong>Filling<\/strong> it with the <strong>Paint Bucket<\/strong> didn&#8217;t make them go away. I wanted some catchlights and a bit of dimension so I went into the <strong>Styles<\/strong> menu and chose <strong>Wow Plastic<\/strong>. It&#8217;s one of <strong>Elements<\/strong>&#8216; core <strong>Styles<\/strong> that is part of the basic software. The one I&#8217;ve outlined in the screenshot is a CLEAR plastic <strong>Style<\/strong> so the colours below it will be unchanged. But&#8230; if you apply it to the actual doodle or yin-yang layer, the colour will disappear. Too much. So I&#8217;ll adjust it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-60919\" src=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8-1-500x315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8-1-500x315.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8-1-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8-1-875x552.jpg 875w, https:\/\/gingerscraps.net\/gsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/8-1.jpg 1337w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a good skill to develop. You can pretty much always make adjustments to <strong>Layer Styles<\/strong>. And you can see what you&#8217;re doing as you do it, which really helps. To get into the <strong>Style Settings<\/strong> menu, double-click on the <em><strong>fx<\/strong><\/em> icon on the right side of the <strong>Layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I changed the <strong>Lighting Angle<\/strong> to <strong>60\u00b0<\/strong>, tweaked the <strong>Drop Shadow Size<\/strong> and <strong>Distance<\/strong> to <strong>16 pixels<\/strong> each, lowered the <strong>Opacity<\/strong> to <strong>46%<\/strong>, set the <strong>Outer Glow<\/strong> to <strong>54 pixels<\/strong> at <strong>39% Opacity<\/strong> and decreased the <strong>Bevel<\/strong> to <strong>35 pixels<\/strong>. I don&#8217;t need to remember what those settings were, I can just <strong>Copy Layer Style<\/strong> to <strong>Paste<\/strong> it onto the doodle. But not THE doodle&#8230; a <strong>Copy Layer<\/strong>. It can be a background, a frame (pop a photo into the centre instead of a yin-yang) or even a 3D element. Don&#8217;t be afraid to experiment!! If something doesn&#8217;t look like you want it to, just <strong>Undo<\/strong> [<strong>CTRL\/CMD&gt;Z<\/strong>] as many steps as you need to (my fingers just find that keyboard shortcut naturally, from so much practice) and try something different.
