Let’s Meet a Designer: Misty O’Brien Designs

What is your name and your Digi-scrap blog address?
Misty O’Brien – https://scrappaperie.blogspot.com/

Snag my Blinkie and you might get RAK’d!

Tell us a little bit about your family.
I have been married to Dan for 3 years. We’ve been friends for 11 years but we go all the way back to 1st grade as far as knowing each other. Surprisingly we were not high school sweethearts and didn’t start dating until 5 years after high school. We have two sons, Ian who is 2 and Aidan who is 8 months. We have one large cat (20 lb Russian Blue mix) named Bones.

What other hobbies do you have besides designing and scrapping?
I love to read. I miss it. Lately it’s been more magazines than novels. I also love traveling. We try to get away whenever we can. I really like to swim too.

How did you get started designing and scrapping?
I started scrapping in high school, the old fashioned paper way. I never really got elaborate. I put all my scrap stuff away in college and didn’t even think about doing it again until Ian was born. There was no way I could paper scrap with a baby so I searched for ways to do it online. My husband showed me the ropes of Photoshop and with some freebies, I was off! I started designing in January 2009. It was one of my resolutions to just try it. I didn’t think I would start selling for awhile but Ginger scooped me up and here I am.

How long have you been designing?
4 months and I am exclusively with Gingerscraps

Which programs do you use to design?
I use Photoshop CS with Illustrator. We have a boatload of Adobe Creative Suite products but PS is the only one I know how to use.

Do you draw most of your items with a mouse, hand draw and scan, or do you use your camera?
I use my camera a lot. I just got a Bamboo Fun tablet last month and am experimenting with drawing. I drew a lot of elements in my Woodland Park Zoo kit.

Where does your inspiration usually come from?
Ideas are always coming to me when I’m lying in bed at night. I really need to keep a journal at bedside! Inspiration usually comes from random items. Could be a colorful flower, a design on some fabric, a song, the season, etc

How did you pick your design name?
I’m not creative in naming. I was dilly dallying so Ginger just used my name with Designs and I liked it so it stayed.

Who are your favorite three designers?
Gingerscraps of course. Ginger was the first designer I ever used and I was a religious follower of her blog for months before I applied to be a CT.
Polka Dot Plum is a favorite too. They have some shabby chic stuff that is really versatile.

I also love all of the other designers at Gingerscraps. – Make sure you check out Wyld Web Designs, Scrappy Cocoa, Graham Like the Cracker, Spinky Dink Designs, Miss Erin Scraps, and Statements by Jodi

What is your favorite part of a kit to design?
The papers – I spent a ton of time on the papers in Romantical

What is the weirdest thing you have used as a texture?
Pool Water. I don’t think that’s too weird but it was a spur of the moment shot while watching my son swim

What is your favorite kit that you have designed?
Definitely has to be Romantical – just because of the papers

What is your least favorite?
I don’t have one. Haha

How do you get started on a kit? Palette first? Rough idea on what you want your papers or elements to look like?
I never start with a palette. Ever. Although I bet it would be easier! I start with an idea or a theme.

How long does it typically take you to make a kit?
2 weeks to a month – If I could be at the computer all the time it would probably be 2 days.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I am a huge procrastinator so I’d stick to schedule more often if I could!

What is the one word that best describes you?
Compassionate. I always have compassion for other people without judgment. And I always defend the people I have compassion for. I am super loyal 🙂

Who is the most important person in your life?
Person being key word, my husband

What is something that not many people know about you?
I learned how to read when I was just under two and a half.

If you could travel anywhere where would you go?
Ireland again

When you were little what did you dream of being when you grew up?
Anything FBI related

What do you like doing with your family?
We like traveling, hanging out with extended family, being outside, anything that keeps us together.

Where is your favorite place to be?
Anywhere my kids are.

Edward or Jacob?
Oh Jen, lol. I have never read nor have I seen anything Twilight. Maybe someday.

CU or do it your self?
Both. There are just some things I can’t draw yet and I am thankful for CU.
