Well, It was Bound to Happen…
For awhile my laptop has been acting up a bit, all things I could ignore. I had planned to back up my files, but of course I kept putting it off. To make a long story short, procrastination is a BAD thing! Yesterday, after yet another protracted Windows update, my laptop became a very expensive door stop. The update somehow deleted a system file that is essential for the proper functioning of the thing. While I’ve been able to get into my files, my laptop is essentially done for without a factory reset. I bought a new one this morning and am diligently retrieving all my important stuff from the brick so that I can install it all on the new one. But considering it took 18 hours to copy just my current digi-scrapping folder it’s going to take some time.
This unpleasant event will have another effect, which is to force me to move completely over to Photoshop Elements 2019 – no sense installing both version 15 and 2019 on the new laptop. What was holding me back was having to reload all my brushes, styles and actions… Now I have to do that anyway. Moving along. Slowly!
My words of wisdom for today: If you haven’t backed up your files in awhile, either to an external hard drive or to the Cloud, plan to do it SOON. Like today! Don’t be like me, forced into action and losing precious productive time. When I’m back up and running on all cylinders, I’ll bring you something flashy and fun, I promise.
Oh my goodness that is so sad to hear 🙁 Sometimes computers suck !!! Hope you don’t run into too many snags as you are putting everything back to working order.
brutal brutal brutal!!! that’s devastating! i have two externals and i also back up to a cloud service. losing precious photos and digital art supplies would tear my heart out!!! look on the bright side .. you now have a modern doorstop!!! (sorry couldn’t resist)
Ahhh….computers which make life so much easier, can also be so time-consuming! So although this is taking up a lot of your “scrapping time”, as Lisa said, you now have a modern doorstop. And you didn’t lose any precious files & you get a new computer out of it!!! (less the money)
Thanks for the warning!! This happened to me a couple of years after I started digi-scrapping. I lost a lot of files (fortunately, no photos were lost) … now I back up in several places; but I haven’t used the cloud yet. I’m thinking that I should (although I really can’t afford it financially) but if a natural disaster were to happen …
Praying that everything goes smoothly & you don’t run into too many frustrations!!! Looking forward to your next tutorial…
Just very curious, what version of Windows were you using on your old laptop that went down? I have a therory as I have heard this before.
Windows 10… I’m always wary when it updates, because it usually causes some sort of problem – moving files, renaming things, that sort of thing. But this is the first time it actually deleted a folder. And with 10, you can’t opt out of updates, only schedule them for a time when you’re idle. The door stop was chosen by my husband, who has very different wants when it comes to computers, so he bought one that would do all the things he does… only problem was, he had to buy the demo model. It was a hassle to set up because the store had locked down most of the functions. And it has this odd glitch in the start menu where it believes the fan motor has failed, so as it’s running through its system checks, it lets out the most annoying, ear-splitting alarm that could wake the neighbours. Now it’ll be his problem. He plans to run a factory reset then reinstall Windows. He wants to use it as a portable gaming system. So he’s welcome to it!
i don’t have a laptop .. i use a pc and my ipad … pc for all the stuff i do creatively, ipad because i can do a LOT of things that i can do on the pc and it’s portable. BUT … my husband has his own laptop so he doesn’t go near my pc. yay! great solution!!! i firmly believe in separate systems for married couples (if at all possible)! hah!
He doesn’t actually use my system, and I wouldn’t dare use his. When his mom died and left him a lot of money, he had a system custom-built to his specs. I prefer a laptop to a desktop because of portability. Back in the day, I made presentations at a number of critical care nursing conferences, the first of which required me to provide my own equipment. Now it’s a habit!
