Tutorial Tuesday (Digital Scrapbooking)

8 ball, Corner Pocket!

Last week when I was struggling to find a topic to write about, I asked the GingerScraps Ad Team members for some ideas. Teresa suggested I do something about pocket scrapping. I have to tell you, I was floored. Pocket scrapping isn’t my thing and it’s really not my comfort zone either. I know it was a big part of the digi world several years ago, and I flirted with Project 52 (there’s NO WAY I could commit to Project 365 and I admit it!) but I wasn’t all that successful. So I had some learning to do before I could present myself as an expert. Ha! The EXPERT is Becky Higgins, the developer of Project Life. She has an app for that in addition to a whole paper line for pocket scrapping.

What IS pocket scrapping? Basically, it’s a clean-and-simple style of layout based mainly on a grid. It’s ideal for documenting the memorable (and the ordinary) events of our lives. Each section of the grid or block can hold a photo, a pocket/journal card, art work or a cluster of embellishments.

Why is it called pocket scrapping? It has its roots in paper scrapping, and it makes use of vinyl pockets of mainly two standard sizes, 2″x3″ and 4″x6″. Digital pocket scrapping follows the same format, and it lends itself very well to hybrid scrapping. You can create your page, print it and then attach buttons, ribbons, lace and pockets holding ephemera to the page.

Most of the designers on the GingerBread Ladies team here create kits and templates that work beautifully for pocket scrapping. In fact there are pages and pages of kits tagged for this style of memory keeping. And it’s easy to find them, too! I thought about giving you a list of designers whose products are amazing for pocket pages, but it would be a lot faster just to show you how to see them for yourself.

I’d love to show you some examples I found in the Gallery. This one is from trina513. I like that she’s used her Instagram photos.

minicooper452 created this one. The photos tell a story, and the journaling preserves the excitement of the day.

This one by emscraps is obviously a Project 52 layout. Em has managed to maintain her P52 for years now!

Belis2mi has documented a special day for her children with this layout.

I really like the feel this layout from amyjcaz has, with the photos of how she spent her day at the beach.

Because I live in cowboy country, this one by psychozoe caught my eye right away.

And then there’s this one from firstoscartgrouch that’s so whimsical and fun.

After looking at all these examples of pocket scrapping and seeing the individual stamps of each scrapper on her layout, I decided to give it a shot! It’s pretty amateurish, but maybe if I do a few more…

Next week there will not be a tutorial. We’re going to visit my parents and then our daughter in her new home in the mountains for a few days and I just won’t be able to squeeze in a blog post. I’ll be doing all the driving so I’ll be seeking a horizontal surface!

Creative Style | Project 52/365

Happy 2017 everyone! I got a bit overwhelmed at the start of the year; and I failed to bring you your weekly inspiration. Even though we are two weeks into 2017, it isn’t too late to start on our photo projects. I am talking about Project 365 and Project 52. What are those? According to Google

Simply put, Project 365 is committing to taking one photo a day for a year. Whether you’re using a fancy DSLR, or simply using your phone, there is no wrong or right way to put together your own Project 365.

Basically a photo a day for project 365 and a photo a week for project 52. You can capture it however you want, post it however you want (or not at all)…or scrap it! I personally post them on Instagram with my personal hashtag, as well as scrap them.

To help you on your way (and to keep going) GingerScraps has a challenge area just for this, as well as a section in the store dedicated to the products you can use on your layouts. Today we are going to showcase a few of those items.

P52: Using Evernote

First off, I apologize for the long period of time between blog posts. I’m honestly so behind and it’s not even funny. Things have gotten so hectic around here, courtesy of just life, 😆 I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about.

Since I am so behind (I just finished Week 08, so I have 8 weeks worth of layouts to make up! To do that, I’m using Evernote!

That’s the screenshot of my desktop with the app. I just love it! I can create a whole page dedicated to just each week’s highlights. So much fun!

P52: Building Your Stash: St. Patrick’s Day

With certain holidays, you need a good assortment of things! You never know what’s going to happen, or how it can play into your day.

For my family, St. Patrick’s Day is a big one. My son’s birthday is on that day, so we always buy him a new shirt for it, and a lot of the decorations and themes involve it. It’s our little tradition, and thus far, he loves it! He gets so excited to see how we’ll incorporate it each year.

Here are just a few wonderful St. Patrick’s Day kits picked from the GS store:

Project 52: Building Your Stock

I’m sorry I missed last week. I think this might be better to be done as a bi-weekly. I’d love to do every week, but things get nuts, and I run out of time. Especially in the middle of the month, and the end of the month. Bear with me as I figure out the perfect schedule for this!

This week, it’s about building up your stock of kits for digitally scrapping your weeks. A lot of people use the same kit for the whole year, and that’s totally okay, but sometimes, you want to either mix it up, or at least work it out so that it matches but it’s not identical. Or you want some fun new elements. These kits, as suggested by our designers, are PERFECT for building up your stock for daily photo-taking and scrapping those memories.

Project 52: Template Ideas

I’m sorry I missed last week. I think I jinxed it when I wrote about the icks. I ended up not feeling 100% most of the week.

This week, I thought I’d show some template choices when doing the P52 challenge. I only chose one template series from a few designers, but there are plenty to choose from!

A great template series by Connie Prince.  She has two different series of templates, but I’ll admit I get all “hot and bothered” over these. I love the stitches! I also love the mix of picture sizes and shapes!

A series by JB Studio that I like a lot. There’s plenty of room for pictures, even adding more if you need them, as well as lots of room for journaling, which is a big deal with P52 layouts.

AND!! I just found out that a second set will be available for sale on Friday! 😀 They come in letter and 12×12 sizes!

LissyKay Designs has a LOT of these. There’s a wide-variety, and they fit every season, major event, and the like! I love them!

I’ll be honest. Rachel (Pretty in Green) actually created these because I asked for them 😀 There’s a variety, though a few were lost (and will be replaced ASAP) during the server/store upgrade that happened a few months ago.

This series by Dagi’s Temp-Tations is perfect for the P365-type layouts!

Project 52: Example Layouts

And now we’re wrapping up Week 03, and I figured now would be a good time to show off some layouts that have been shared. I love how creative everyone is getting, and how each person is taking the challenge so personally, and making it working for them.

Created by Sarah. Yes, that would be me. I’m going more for the Project Life theme, and scrapping some of my favorite pictures. This is just one side. I take a lot of selfies, and since that’s just about the only way we get pictures of me, I figured I should scrap them. Sometimes I need photographic proof that I actually put on some make-up.

Project 52: Apps!

Okay, last week, we talked about inspiration. Today, I’m going over APPS!

Apps are a bit of a personal choice. The ones I use are more photography based, and the ones someone else uses might be more for journaling! It’s always personal.

As I mentioned last week, I’m more of an Android girl and know nothing about IOS, but here are some IOS apps suggested by another user:

Journaling
Momento- My very favorite app. I use it every day
Evernote
Photo editing/ filters/ social
Instagram
VSCO cam
PicTapGo
